Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help identify the colour of this baby if possible? The pairing was between two Black mice. I can't be sure of what they carry. The sire is Hurley, his father was Black and so was his mother. All of Hurley's siblings are Black as well. The doe is Yin, her mother was Bone and I'm unsure of the father. Yin's siblings were a mix of Bone and Black (to my knowledge). These babies are 5 days old, picture from today. There is 11 in the litter, 9 babies are Black except for 2. A picture of the colour in question next to a black. Thank you

If I had to guess, I'd say you've got a hidden recessive on both sides which is coming through. There seem like two possibilities, a b recessive (which means this is a chocolate mouse) or a c-recessive. If it's a c-dilute, I'm going to theorize that it's a mock chocolate. If both the parents are non-diluted but one's descended from a bone mouse, that means you've got a Cc* x Cc(e) or Cc* x Cc, so if the unknown c-gene is c(ch) then you'd get one of two types of mock chocolate. Cc(ch) x Cc(e) gets you dark mock chocolate c(ch)c(e). And Cc(ch) x Cc gets you light mock chocolate c(ch)c. The b gene seems to be the more likely possibility, to be honest, which means you've got a chocolate mouse. Either way, you'll know for sure once it gets it's adult coat in. The presence or absence points will make it obvious whether it's a chocolate or mock chocolate.

Thanks greydawnbreaking :)I haven't been able to check on them lately, I'll have a look now. Probably chocolate as mentioned. Thanks again!

I had a look at them today and they look to be chocolate! There is also a chocolate bub in a sibling litter so I guess that generation of my mousies carry chocolate!

I just thought I'd say - that "dark mock chocolate" that Janette has posted looks nothing like the c(ch)c(e) that we get here. In my experience, it's almost impossible to tell the difference with individual variations between 'light' mock choc and 'dark' mock choc. That picture above of the dark mouse looks closer to what we get for havana here, that is non-agouti c(ch)c(ch).
