Hey all,
I've just had a litter born to my beautiful blue fawn longcoat rex hamster mouse, P-Body, and Eevee, a lovely champagne marked tan. Unfortunately both parents have started sneezing and noisy breathing. I've got some Baytril for P-Body, but am worried about giving it to a nursing mum. Has anyone had any experience doing this? If I lose mum, I lose the whole litter, so I'm tempted to medicate and deal with any consequences, but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions first. Would getting some doxy be better than Baytril? Or another product?

Hi Katy, I have found some info for you as I have never medicated whilst pregnant I am going of this source: ratguide.com/meds/antimicrobial_agents/enrofloxacin_baytril.php About treatment while pregnant it says this: "It is also important to note that although the use of fluoroquinolones have not been recommended for initial treatment in pregnant and nursing does or juvenile rats (under 4 months) due to the risks of cartilage abnormalities (Egerbacher et al., 2000), in cases where other antibiotics are not helping, or if the infection is deemed severe, the benefit of using fluoroquinolones (alone or in combination with other compatible antimicrobials) may, in fact, outweigh the risks." And this for doxy: "It is also important to note that although the use of fluoroquinolones have not been recommended for initial treatment in pregnant and nursing does or juvenile rats (under 4 months) due to the risks of cartilage abnormalities (Egerbacher et al., 2000), in cases where other antibiotics are not helping, or if the infection is deemed severe, the benefit of using fluoroquinolones (alone or in combination with other compatible antimicrobials) may, in fact, outweigh the risks." So basically medicate and deal with any consequences.

Thanks for the link Andy. I'm thinking I might start her on a course tonight. She's still strong, I don't think she's going to keel over, but I'm just worried about a sniffly mum Luckily P-Body is the best dad ever, and I couldn't get him away from his precious babies last night <3
