First of all, I hope that every member of this forum and all their friends and family are safe right now, with the NSW bushfires currently raging.
Second, this has made me think of what I would do if my area or my house caught fire. Stuff can be replaced, but lives can't. So I thought I'd open up a thread to discuss what emergency plans we have for how to take care of our pets if the worst should happen. Even if we aren't in a bushfire-vulnerable area, one moment of inattention to the stove or faulty wiring can cause the same damage.
If I've got the time to prepare, I'll put all the males and all the females into two tubs. Wherever I end up taking shelter, whether it's with family/friends or in a community shelter, it probably won't be set up to accommodate small pets (if it accommodates pets at all) so I want to consolidate as much as possible. The males will fight, but hopefully the stress of the move itself will scare them into mutual solidarity.
If there's no time I'm also going to dump every mouse into a single tub for transport out of the fire. I'll also probably use soaked tea towels to drape across the mesh to protect them from heat and ash. I'll probably end up with every single female pregnant, but at least they'll be alive.
I keep all my passports and documents in a folder in a bag, so if there's an emergency I can just grab it and go. I've decided that I'm going to add an emergency baggie of mouse food and a spare water bottle in the bag in case.

I had never thought about it until 2 weeks ago when we had a fire come too close to where we live for comfort. We are pretty screwed if fires did come close to us because there is only one road in and one road out where we live so I am going to ask the local Rural Fire Service when it all calms down about what we actually could do.
