I have a question... recently I acquired a rack of mouse tubs (16 tubs!!) Now that I have the space, I'm going to start up another breeding project I've been thinking about. Basically piebald mice that are completely white except for their butt! So like a Dutch mouse without the face markings, or like the opposite of a Rumpwhite. (or as pictured - just grabbed it from google ) Thanks to some breeder friends of mine I have two awesome little starter ladies who just about fit the bill. I don't have any males though - I do have a dove tan piebald carrier but he doesn't have *the* best temperament so not sure if I want to base the start of my line on him. Anyway so my question: To start my project would it be better to: A. Breed them to a Self male who doesn't carry piebald, then mate the sons back to the mothers. B. Find a random piebald male to mate them to. One that doesn't necessarily have a white upper body/coloured rump, because I imagine that would be difficult to find. or C. Breed them to a banded male? Or am I overthinking it & it doesn't really matter? I just remember reading about creating dutch mice out of piebalds by specifically selecting mice who have a tendency for colour in the desired spots (rump + the face markings). I figured this might be a similar deal (except without the face markings). Any help much appreciated!

My advice is option A you will be able to see if the mice are banded and I think with this marking you will have to inbreed heavily to make sure you get similar markings in the offspring.

Thanks Andy :-) I've come to the same conclusion, I'll be going with option A. My housemate is also acquiring an almost-dutch buck So after the ladies first 2 litters, that buck should be old enough to work with. Assuming the ladies stay in good condition, of course! I will post about my progress. /excited!

I would also have a chat to Klara at Iced Mice. Klara was developing a line of Dutch mice a while ago but I believe it was quite difficult. Nevertheless I'm sure she has a lot of valuable experience on breeding marked mice.

Sounds like an exciting start. Can you post a picture of the rack with the 16 tubs and also some measurements?
I'm looking into building something similar!

I'll try to take a decent piccie tonight & start a new thread. ^_^ I paired two rumpy ladies that I have with my piebald-carrying dove tan. I also acquired a male buttmouse!!! My friend spotted him at a feeder breeders place and got him for me. So it's all happening. I'll post pics when the first litters are born. Buttmice ftw
