Hello everyone,
I'm looking at starting up a mouse breeding program (very early stages aka. research). Having a look around the internet I've more or less decided I'd like to produce a fawn/yellow/red colour mouse, of good health and temperament and standard coat (disappointed to learn satin isn't here in Aus!).
I've read a bit about the Ay and Avy allele and don't completely understand the side effects. Are homozygous mice with either of these alleles viable? What health issues are there? What other ways are there to produce a fawn/yellow/red colour mouse?
Cheers, Scott

What area do you live in? I would encourage you to join a Club or go to one of their shows to meet people and see their animals. Good idea to read some Aussie mouse Standards to get an idea of exactly what is available here and also use the correct terminology. We have fawn and ginger mice here. If you go to the Australian Rodent Fanciers Society of NSW ausrfsnsw.com/shows/ and look at the mouse standards, you will see what we have. Health issues for fawn mice include obesity, so it is very hard but not impossible to find mice that don't have this problem. I don't think we have the overseas problems with viability. Buy from reputable pet breeders. Their mice generally have little problems with tumours and they prefer to breed from healthy long lived mice unlike pet shop or feeder breeders who don't really care about those things. Most fawns carry brindling and sable, so you need to choose mice without these modifiers to breed clear fawns.

Thanks for the information Mouskateers. Sorry I'm in Adelaide, I've updated my profile now.
I'll take a look at the website you suggest.

Hi Scott and welcome. Where abouts in Adelaide are you? I have family over there. Another way to produce orangy colored mice is to breed for an argente which is a pink eyed agouti.

I've just moved here so still looking for a permanent place. More than likely be north of the city.
When I come down to buying a I'll have to see whats available here before I get my heart set on certain colours.
Do people ship mice from interstate? Does anyone know roughly what that costs?

yes, you can ship mice but you need to find a breeder willing to do it for you as it can be time consuming, can cost $$ just to get to the airport and quite frustrating dealing with the freight people. You're looking at about $100 for approximately 8 mice. You go through Qantas Freight, they're the cheapest.
