Although cedar is high in phenols which are dangerous to small animals, aspen is not, Aspen does not require much in the way if kiln drying as it does not contain lethal chemicals like cedar or untreated pine shavings. I used to use aspen and it was fantastic. The biggest issue with aspen though is that it is very expensive. Currently I use kiln dried dust extracted shavings and have had less respiratory related illnesses whilst using it, find it is better with absorbing than paper pellet, tends to smell better and lasts a lot longer and is cheaper. Also it depends on the brand, Superior Shavings is good, but I vastly prefer Hysorb as it a finer flake and lasts up to a week longer than Superior. If I'm in a bit of a pickle or my stockist has no shavings available I do run to my nearest store for some Back to Nature or paper pellet kitty litter, but I find that it gets a nasty wet papery smell after a few days and needs changing very regularly. It's great to hear everyones experiences with substrates
