Nine days old. Pretty sure we have black and agouti...and we thought Siamese (we have worlds worst collection of agouti-based and poor black based Himy and Siameses) occasionally our argente/dove gene pops up. could the little pale Rex girl be dove rather Siamese? Sort of silver cast to the coat- not as "creamy" as a Himy or a Siamese? What do others think..? Mum agouti dad very average Siamese or possibly Himalayan.

Do you know the eye color? If it is ruby then definitely a siamese. My guess from the photo is siamese.

If you have the history of the parents that will help Could be himi, too, and if you have himi in the lines, then it could also be albino!

Mmm Siamese then. Not sure I can tell red from ruby when closed. Any tips? black, red(ruby) and pink. obviously black eyes are very conspicuous, red(ruby)/pink appear more as slits without the black blob. with the siblings being agouti and black, any possibility that it's argente?

Pretty sure not argente. I can tell black eyes from red or ruby....but how do you tell ruby from red in an infant mouse?

Pretty sure not argente. I can tell black eyes from red or ruby....but how do you tell ruby from red in an infant mouse? Argente has pink eyes. Ruby and red are the same colour. Do you mean ruby from pink? Such as the difference between argente and Siamese? In which case you can't tell the difference. You need to know other factors such as pedigrees or genetics of the parents involved, or by the colour of the pup.

Ah! Apparently I can't tell red/ruby from pink then.....and you're saying you can't in an infant mouse. pedigrees all on a defunct computer hence my inability. [blames computer for own ineptitude and hopes no-one will notice...]

Well I mis-identified the mystery. Verity (the pale rex) is quite probably an agouti-based Siamese as predicted. The two classic wild-mouse agouti girls (you tell wild agouti I think from the black upper surface of the paws and the dark muzzle - anecdotal evidence from The Natural Mousery only)called Pippin and Tog are exactly that.
But the mouse we thought was black is....actually a very dark agouti with very little yellow undercoat. She (Poppy Pogle) is what we call a "thimble mouse" We have a line of mice who, like their wild ancestor seem like runts at birth. We are always convinced they are "normal but sick" but their development keeps pace and they are as active if not more active as their siblings and are often first out of the nest and are very adventurous (which a sick runt would not be). They grow up to be just like their siblings but ....as small as a small wild mouse - between 20 - 29g. Looks like this mysteriously dark agouti will be like this. Photo when I get a moment.
