Hi, In one of my latest litters a baby appears to have some sort of infection around its umbilical chord area?
(Excuse the deteriorating nail polish ) This is only my second litter so I haven't come across this kind of thing before. Does anyone have any ideas what it is? Should I have the baby PTS, is there anything I can do to treat it or will it go away on its own? The baby is 4 days old, from a litter of 9 and none of the siblings/mum have it. Thank you in advance

I haven't had anything like this before but I have had mum's overgroom young babies especially during the birthing process and ended up with a baby missing a few toes or in one case a whole foot. That may be the case here during the birthing process mum chewed a little bit too much when she was cleaning bubs up? If the baby still seems to be gaining weight and healthy I would just leave it if bubs isn't thriving I would PTS.

Thanks Andy. This one is the same size as all the others and just as healthy...just has this 'thing'. I'll keep monitoring it and see what happens

if you're worried about it you can use a cotton bud and dab on a diluted solution of Betadine and water. To me this looks like it's healing so I really wouldn't worry about it and definitely NOT PTS especially if it's keeping up with his siblings.

I treated it with a Bedatine solution last night, thank you for the advice I was really hoping I wouldn't have to PTS...I just put it out there in case others have had the issue and their bub suffered from it or it caused them any pain.

I'm interested in any updates on how this baby is progressing. In the pic, I agree that the wound appears to be healing, and it was probably caused by the mum overcleaning when removing the umbilical cord.

It has healed so quickly over four days! I am amazed at how fast baby mice can heal! There is only a little pinprick of a scab left. Unless I was looking for it, I wouldn't have even noticed noticed it The baby is great like all the others, growing fine, healthy and a chubba bub ^_^ I will be getting pictures of the litter today
