So here is our current litter. the Natural Mousery is just us and the is no club here so we breed for ourselves and pets for friends only. Our lines are very limited and I don't suppose any of these little babies will be anything special. But they will be loved and cared for. Siamese Dad and agouti Mum. One small black, two agoutis and one....well we thought Siamese but now wondering dove...... Our genetics are all over the place. Nine days old.

A lovely new generation. Do you still get any thimble mice?

Sadly the tiniest mouse in this litter, Poppy, we thought was a "thimble mouse" really was a runt and she died two days ago (much lamented by Eliza who was her devoted carer). Your average little runt will pull through with care but I begin to wonder whether our limited gene pool has lead to homozygosity in deleterious genes in this instance (ie double recessive for something lethal). So she was definitely not a "thimble mmouse" as they are healthy.
I suddenly understand all the controversy with "teacup poodles" Some teacup poodles are healthy poodles of miniature stature but some are unhealthy runts or poodles with genetic diseases that cause limited stature and hence they are confused with/deliberately passed-off as "teacup poodles" which undermines the concept of a healthy teacup poodle. I myself confused this little mouse with one of our regular throw-back "thimble" mice. If we had sold her as such (heaven forbid) we would have been guilty of the exact crime levelled at unscrupulous dog-breeders.
Happier new is that we now have THREE baby wild mice from the same litter once mothered by a mouse that met an untimely end in our neighbour's kitchen following her unwelcome attempts to render their entire pantry collection of carbohydrates as Unsuitable For Human Consumption. (Nibbling into packets, defecating freely and giving Mus Musculus a very bad name).
